At least one person has been killed amid several explosions in Kyiv after Russia fired a new missile barrage on New Year’s Eve.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person had been killed after a city centre hotel was damaged by an explosion.

“According to preliminary information, one person died in the Solomianskyi district. Several people were injured,” he said.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, an official in Ukraine’s presidential office, said emergency services were heading to the scene but did not provide further details.

Families were reuniting to see in the new year together when a nationwide air raid siren sounded today.

Officials urged residents to take cover as online footage showed several rockets flying into the country from the Caspian Sea.
