“Let us have the audacity to build autonomy in Corsica, in the Republic” | EUROtoday

[Jeudi 28 septembre, le président de la République s’est exprimé devant les élus de l’Assemblée de Corse, à l’occasion du 80^e anniversaire de la libération de l’île (du 9 septembre au 4 octobre 1943). Voici les principaux extraits de son discours :]

“ (…) It is here, in front of this Hemicycle where the democratic values ​​of Corsica live, that I have come to honor this renewed momentum which supposes common ambition and new recognition. (…)

We are at a historic moment, because I think that there is a collective consciousness precisely to be able to move forward.

And let me tell you on this subject my conviction: Corsica is rooted in France and in the Republic. She was often even a pioneer. Let us think of the Constitution of 1755 by Pascal Paoli, of its democratic modernity. And Corsica today needs more freedom, recognition of its identity, its island and Mediterranean singularity. And it is this rooting in our common history and this recognition that we must hold together to emerge from this situation of incomprehension and confrontation, of distrust and resentment. (…)

I am in favor of a new step being taken.

This stage was ready by the Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, and I would really like to thank him in explicit, who, for greater than a 12 months, has led [ce travail] with you (…) Let’s say it clearly, as I communicate to you, all this work being acknowledged, the establishment can be the failure of us all. At the begin of the 12 months, I personally got here to meet the Corsican delegation in Beauvau. It was on this event that I requested the delegation to ship me proposals earlier than July 14. This was executed by the presentation of a number of resolutions earlier than your meeting and the massive majority vote on one in every of them, on July 5.
