On Sunday, Mr Basu instructed the Government: “Your eyes were opened to the glaring anomaly in the law. You did not take it up at the time, and it is worth revisiting.

“For the Government and ministers to attack the Met is thus unjustified. The police need support at this challenging time. If the Government doesn’t like the law it can change it, as it has been asked to do.”

At the pro-Palestine rally on Saturday, organised by Hizb ut-Tahrir, members of the extremist Islamic group displayed a banner with the slogan “Muslim Armies! Rescue the people of Palestine.”

In one video clip, a speaker is seen asking the gang: “What is the solution to liberate people in the concentration camp called Palestine?” In response, a number of males will be heard chanting: “Jihad, jihad, jihad”.

Commenting on Twitter on Saturday, the Met mentioned: “The word ‘jihad’ has a number of meanings, but we know the public will most commonly associate it with terrorism.”

The drive mentioned counter-terrorism officers had assessed the video and “not identified any offences arising from the specific clip”. It added, nonetheless, that officers could be speaking to the speaker to discourage him from chanting in future.
