A brand new species of wasp named after the villain of the collection Dr Who | EUROtoday
VSDo you recognize Dalek? Those who love the British collection Dr Who will acknowledge the names of the normal villains. Except now, this identify may also characterize a brand new genus of wasps, found by the Natural History Museum in London. It is likely one of the 619 genera of wasps introduced by the museum, amongst 815 discoveries, experiences the Times Thursday December 28. Most of those wasps belong to the Encyrtidae group, that are parasitic bugs that lay eggs in invertebrate hosts.
“I thought it was a good name for a genre and a bit of fun, having been a big Doctor Who fan growing up,” says Dr John Noyes, who took half within the analysis. These discoveries come at a time when many international locations are dropping a part of their biodiversity. “We are unable to protect what we do not know, and so describing new species is an integral part of the work of protecting, preserving and reversing the decline in biodiversity observed in the natural world,” explains the Museum.

Some of those discoveries are literally species which can be already extinct, akin to two species of big penguins thought to have lived round 50 million years in the past close to New Zealand. “Many fossil penguins reached enormous sizes, easily dwarfing the largest penguins alive today,” in accordance with Dr. Daniel Field, co-author of the species description.
This tribute to the British collection comes on the event of its sixtieth anniversary. The BBC celebrated this anniversary with three particular episodes, which introduced again David Tennant, one of many collection’ fan favorites.
