The escalation started with the arrest in Azerbaijan, on December 4, of a French entrepreneur, Martin Ryan, boss of a small import-export firm, Merkorama, specializing in wine. Based in Baku since 2020, this 34-year-old man would have been “stamped” by the French secret providers. According to sources near the Azerbaijani authorities, he was approached by a DGSE agent stationed on the French embassy in Baku to gather and transmit data, actions thought of to be “acts of espionage”.
