Iran on the UN, 'act of self-defense after Israel assault in Syria'

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saed Iravani, despatched a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after his nation attacked Israel, explaining that it was “an act of self-defense” after Israel attacked their embassy in Syria in early April. “This action is in the exercise of Iran's inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, and in response to recurrent Israeli military aggressions, in particular the 1 April 2024 armed attack against the Iranian diplomatic offices, in defiance of Article 2, paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter”, the Iranian ambassador said, as reported by the IRNA agency, explaining that “if the Israeli regime were to commit aggression again military, Iran's response will certainly and decisively be stronger and more resolute.” Iravani added: “Unfortunately, the United Nations Security Council has failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security, allowing the Israeli regime to cross red lines and violate fundamental principles of international law. Such violations have exacerbated tensions in the region and threatened regional and international peace and security.” “The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right to self-defense when required.”
