NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst from the CDU discovered an SPD politician thrilling in his youth. This was Björn Engholm, Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein from 1988 to 1993, as Wüst advised “Stern”. “I was 13 or 14 years old and, as a 14-year-old, I just found him to be a good guy and convincing in his performance,” he reported. Engholm was the primary politician he discovered thrilling. Wüst added: “For me, Helmut Kohl was usually too close to my father back then.”

When requested why he didn't be part of the SPD, Wüst mentioned that after a visit to the GDR it was clear to him that reunification needed to occur. “That’s what Helmut stood for Kohl and the CDU.”
