Norway describes the popularity of Palestine as a State as a “memorable” day

The Norwegian Government described this Tuesday as “memorable” the entry into power of this Nordic nation's recognition of Palestine as an impartial and sovereign State.

“For more than thirty years, Norway has been one of those that has fought the hardest for a Palestinian state. Today, when Norway officially recognizes Palestine as a State, is a memorable day in the relationship between Norway and Palestine,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated in a press release.

Eide reveals his confidence that the Palestinian authorities will proceed with the “complicated” work of creating reforms and laying the muse to control “both the West Bank and Gaza after a ceasefire.”

“It is regrettable that the Israeli Government shows no signs of engaging constructively. The international community must increase economic and political support for Palestine and continue working towards a two-state solution,” says Eide.

The choice has obtained criticism from the right-wing opposition, which considers the measure inappropriate presently, and from Israel, which summoned the Norwegian ambassador in Tel Aviv to precise its rejection. (Efe)
