Carmel Wilde, defending, told the court: “He does deny the offence. His companion sits behind the courtroom and has been right here all through the proceedings. She is aware of a greater facet to him and stands by him.

“He has not been in trouble for some time. There has been nothing since 2008. He served in the Armed Forces previously with an exemplary record. He has always been at work and is hard-working.

“It was opportunistic offending. It was not one thing he had gone out looking for, searching for younger ladies. The complainant, very eloquently, stated she didn’t need this man to go to jail. She wished to grasp why any individual would do that.”

Doyle was found guilty of one count of sexual assault by a jury. He was jailed for two years and told to sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

Sentencing, Judge David Swinnerton said: “I settle for what occurred was not deliberate prematurely, however you probably did search to take the chance. That was predatory in my opinion.

“There are two reasons that she got in the car with you. One was because you were a bus driver and she trusted you because you were in a public position.

“The different cause was since you instructed her you had a daughter of her age and would hate your daughter to be in that state of affairs, due to this fact you wouldn’t depart her stranded. She was, not surprisingly, terrified.”
