Sir Keir said: “It is a privilege to stand with surviving D-Day veterans in Normandy today as we mark this historic anniversary.

“We will commemorate their braveness, we’ll honour their fallen comrades and we’ll make sure that their story isn’t forgotten.

“Our debt to them can by no means repaid in full. But we are able to – and should – honour their sacrifice. This goes past get together politics.

“This is about who we’re as a nation. This is our story, our historical past, our identification – and our future collectively.”
