The world’s favorite French misanthrope author Michel Houellebecq is simply too controversial for the world’s new AI instruments, which discover his views so offensive that they can’t be repeated.

The president of famend French publishing home Gallimard wrote an article revealed Thursday in La Nouvelle Revue Francaise saying he had requested Meta’s AI instrument, Llama, to jot down a scene within the type of Houellebecq.

Llama responded in French that it couldn’t write one thing thought-about “offensive or discriminatory”.

Instead, it supplied in English to jot down a scene that was “respectful and inclusive” akin to a “group of friends in the park on a sunny afternoon” who sing songs “to celebrate the beauty of diversity”.

Houellebecq, arguably France’s largest literary star internationally, is thought for novels with a deeply pessimistic view of the trendy world, by which the sexual revolution, consumerism and globalisation have led to alienation and societal decline.

Antoine Gallimard wrote within the article that the AI was failing to account for “the complexity of human experience” and was making use of values “from the west coast of the United States to say what is good and what is not good to think.”

Asked by an AFP journalist on Thursday, Meta’s AI appeared glad to jot down a scene in Houellebecq’s type, providing an affordable approximation of his vibe – “I felt like a rat in a maze, trapped in this soulless world…” – and so forth.

But when requested to offer his views on ladies sporting the hijab, Llama initially gave a response after which shortly deleted it, saying: “I cannot generate content that perpetuates harmful stereotypes or discrimination.”

Houellebecq has offered the adoption of the hijab in France as an indication of eroding Western values and freedoms, together with in his novel “Submission”, by which a Muslim wins the French presidency.

Another main AI language mannequin, ChatGPT, was much less conflicted on the subject when requested by AFP.

It gave a nuanced response that included: “Houellebecq’s works are fictional and his views are often expressed through complex, satirical, and sometimes exaggerated narratives.”
