Fiona Bruce prompted laughter from the BBC Question Time viewers as she tried to pin down Sir Keir Starmer over previous feedback he made about Jeremy Corbyn.

The BBC presenter grilled the Labour chief on his declare in 2019 that Mr Corbyn can be a “great prime minister”.

But Sir Keir dodged giving a straight reply throughout a back-and-forth on tonight’s election particular in York.

Ms Bruce stated: “You said in 2019 that Jeremy Corbyn would make a great prime minister.

“Now you’ve got stated already you thought you were not going to win that election, however placing that to 1 aspect, you stated he would make an important prime minister.”

As laughter could be heard in the audience, she added: “Did you imply it or did you will have your fingers crossed behind your again?”

There was more laughter when Ms Bruce asked for a yes or no answer to whether he meant it.

Sir Keir instead insisted Mr Corbyn would have made a better premier than Boris Johnson, who won the general election in 2019.

The moment came after the Labour leader defended his support of predecessor Mr Corbyn’s 2019 manifesto, despite recently comparing it to Rishi Sunak’s policy offering.

A BBC Question Time audience member asked the Labour leader: “You criticised the Tory manifesto as Jeremy Corbyn-like. Anything you need can go in it, nothing is costed. Why did you again his authentic manifesto in 2019?”

Sir Keir replied: “In 2019 I campaigned for the Labour Party as I’ve all the time campaigned for the Labour Party.”

He said that afterwards it became clear the electorate “thought it was an excessive amount of and so they wished to see one thing which was totally costed and totally funded.”
