Former England striker Stan Collymore has criticised Labour MP for Tamworth Sarah Edwards over remarks she made concerning the city’s Holiday Inn Express resort days earlier than yesterday’s mob assault.

Ms Edwards, re-elected on July 4 after profitable a by-election final 12 months, advised MPs on July 30 that the residents of her city “wanted their hotel back” and requested why it was getting used to accommodate asylum seekers.

Speaking within the Commons on July 30, Ms Edwards, who hosted a go to from Home Secretary Yvette Cooper final month, stated: “In Tamworth, the Holiday Inn has been used for asylum purposes for years and the simple reality is that residents want their hotel back.

“Tamworth benefits from local tourism and as I have said before in this chamber, the Holiday Inn should be for holidays.

“I therefore welcome today’s announcement that the Border Security, Immigration and Asylum Bill plans to end asylum hotel use.

Posting on X, Mr Collymore, who played for Liverpool and Aston Villa during his career, said: “A hotel is only a hotel when it is used as a hotel. When it is used as a restaurant, it’s a restaurant. When it’s an asylum centre it’s an asylum centre.”

“There are dozens of hotels in Tamworth.

“This is what happens when MPs pander to the crowd and dog whistle. A Labour MP.”

Mr Collymore was not the one one that highlighted the remarks, with former Labour, Respect and Workers Party of Great Britain MP George Galloway pointing saying: “Resign now.”

Commenting on X final night time, Ms Edwards stated: “The scenes in Tamworth tonight of violence are shocking & disgraceful & are still ongoing.

“Thank you to @StaffsPolice for guaranteeing the protection of resort employees & company. This is not going to be tolerated in our city.

“The police officers on the ground have my fullest support.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Ms Edwards via her Parliamentary Office for further comment.

A police officer’s arm was broken in a night of senseless violence, Staffordshire Police said

In total three petrol bombs were used to start a series of fires and officers were assaulted, one of whom suffered a suspected broken arm.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Ellison said: “The mindless violence and acts of despicable thuggery in Tamworth tonight are fully inexcusable.

“The local community do not deserve to be subject to this behaviour, and neither do the brave officers putting themselves in harm’s way to keep everyone safe.”
