“What do you want to do?”: Mayor continues to refuse to simply accept refugees – Now the dispute is escalating | EUROtoday

In the small Bavarian city of Bad Griesbach within the Passau district, the battle over the registration of round 35 Ukrainian refugees is coming to a head.

Mayor Jürgen Fundke (non-partisan electoral neighborhood) continues to refuse to implement the district workplace’s directions to register refugees.

Although the district workplace issued an official request to register by Wednesday, Fundke apparently persistently ignored it.

According to a report by Bayerischer Rundfunk, the written directions had been personally delivered to the mayor. Fundke defined in an interview with the broadcaster that he wouldn’t observe the directions: “What do you want to do? Do you want to suspend me? They can’t and shouldn’t,” he mentioned.

Even the prospect of a supervisory criticism or authorized motion doesn’t enable him to deviate from his course. “I don’t even read them,” he added.

Fundke had forbidden the 35 individuals to be registered. For him, town’s capability to simply accept refugees has been exhausted. On Monday, the deliberate appointments on the residents’ registration workplace for the 35 Ukrainians had been canceled.

The district workplace considers Fundke’s habits to be illegal and regrets the escalation. District Administrator Raimund Kneidinger (CSU) had beforehand expressed his concern that the dispute was being “carried out on the backs of those affected”.

The background to the battle is distribution within the communities. Fundke requires a fairer distribution within the district and factors to the already excessive variety of migrants in his metropolis.

According to the mayor, round 2,300 individuals of assorted nationalities dwell in Bad Griesbach, with a complete inhabitants of round 9,750.
