Mark Cranston, 62, started gathering them 15 years in the past when he needed a doorstop for his backyard shed – and now has greater than 4,000.

He has them stacked in his shed, however says it could be “selfish” to maintain all of them to himself and desires them to be displayed for everybody to take pleasure in.

The assortment features a hearth brick from the SS Politician, which ran aground within the Outer Hebrides in 1941 carrying 264,000 bottles of malt whisky, inspiring the novel Whisky Galore which grew to become a traditional Ealing comedy.

Another is from the demolition of the execution block at Scotland’s largest jail. The oldest is a drainage tile from 1833, and there are even some marking particular royal milestones.

Wife Karen, 47, daughter Hannah, 30, and son Jonathon, 28, have added to the gathering, and his passion is shared with pal Ian Suddaby who has 2,000 bricks of his personal. Mark, from Jedburgh within the Scottish Borders, mentioned: “We want to put them in a museum. We don’t want to lose them and Scotland doesn’t want to lose them.”
