Nearly seventy years after the top of the Algerian War, Emmanuel Macron acknowledged this Friday, on the event of the 70e anniversary of the rebel of 1er November 1954, the “assassination” of the chief of the National Liberation Front (FLN) Larbi Ben M’hidi “by French soldiers” in 1957 through the Battle of Algiers.
By means of a press launch, the Élysée introduced that the President of the Republic “ recognizes today that Larbi Ben M’hidi, national hero for Algeria and one of the six leaders of the FLN who launched the insurrection of 1er November 1954, was assassinated by French soldiers under the command of General Aussaresses. Often presented as the “Algerian Jean Moulin”, Larbi Ben M’hidi was assassinated by General Paul Aussaresses. The latter confessed to his crime in the early 2000s, thus denying the official version which had disguised his death as a suicide attempt.
Towards the creation of a peaceful and shared memory
While tensions between France and Algeria remain high, particularly after the state visit of the French president to Morocco“the recognition of this assassination attests that the work of historical truth, which the President of the Republic initiated with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will continue,” underlines the palace. Through this recognition, Emmanuel Macron pursues his goal of attaining the creation of a peaceable and shared reminiscence, whereas pondering of future generations by looking for methods of the reconciliation of recollections between France and Algeriaspecifies the press launch.
