Two hemicycles, two methods, two responses to potential reductions in State funding for communities. Thursday December 12 and Friday December 13, town of Marseille and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur area, one after the opposite, voted on their preliminary 2025 finances. Accounts, adopted by a majority in each instances, which illustrate the variations in political decisions made by native executives within the face of the vagueness surrounding their monetary relationship with the State.
First to vote, Marseille municipal councilors validated a finances of 1.99 billion euros, a rise of round forty million in comparison with 2024, together with 473.9 million dedicated to funding expenditure. “I am proud that we have an aggressive budget to continue providing a quality public service”welcomed the assorted left mayor, Benoît Payan, from the rostrum. Just a few weeks earlier, the elected official, like most native councilors, was alarmed by the finances proposed by the Barnier authorities and the lack of 48 million euros that this implied for his municipality, in keeping with his groups.
“But the finance invoice was not voted on and we determined to not consider reductions which we have no idea if they’ll happen… We subsequently made a replica and paste of the allocations from earlier years and we stay on our budgetary trajectory »explains the finance assistant and finances rapporteur, Joël Canicave (PS).
