Trump threatens the EU with tariffs if it does not purchase American oil and gasoline | EUROtoday
President-elect Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with tariffs if its member international locations do not buy extra American oil and gasoline. «I informed the European Union that it should make up for its large deficit with the United States by buying our oil and gasoline on a big scale. Otherwise they’re DUTIES all the best way!!!”, he said on the Truth social network.
The United States is the world’s largest producer of crude oil and the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas. LNG buyers – including the EU and Vietnam – have already talked about buying more fuel from the US, partly to deter the threat of tariffs.
Trump has threatened tariffs against countries such as China and Canada, and is particularly focused on nations that have trade deficits with the United States. Europe is already the top destination for American LNG, with more than half of deliveries going to the continent last year.
EU officials and member states have been preparing for a trade offensive since Trump’s election victory last month.
The bloc of 27 was largely caught without warning in 2017 when Trump, citing nationwide safety issues in his earlier presidential time period, imposed tariffs on European metal and aluminum. Since then, the EU has reinvented its commerce doctrine and expanded its vary of instruments, giving it a variety of choices to counter coercive practices.
