The poet, a novelist, was a storyteller was struggling and had stayed in hospital just a few instances. He died in his sleep, surrounded by his spouse and certainly one of his three daughters. His life was marked by struggling: he was first imprisoned in Haiti below the dictatorial regime of François Duvalier, who reigned from 1957 to 1971.

For us, negritude could not be Haitian, because we had already taken this stage. We have rejected this ideology. Duvalier transformed negritude into racist, anti-mulitous and anti-anti ideology that was against him. We had to negotiate, we could not write a poem and say things that could shock the government. It taught us to master our writing, learn the most words. The more words you know, the more interesting things you can write. »»

During his life, Phelps will have published eighteen collections of poems, four novels, a collection of short stories, two plays and a collection of tales. Several of his works will focus on the violence of the regime of François Duvalier or to the political and social situation of his native island of which, despite his forced exile, he will never have detached himself. “I wrote novels to evacuate the dictatorship, its crimes, its horrors. For me, it’s a kind of catharsis, ”he explained.

His work was topped with quite a few awards, together with the 2017 Grand Prix of Poetry of the French Academy, the International Poetry Prize “Gatien Lapointe-Jaime Sabines”, awarded on the finish of 2014 in Mexico, the Chevalier Prize within the Order of Arts and Letters in France in 2014, adopted by the Carbet and all-world prize in 2016 for the entire of his work.

“Of all the humanities, poetry is the one one which has been created by man. We discover music in nature, portray, sculpture, music, the whole lot … however poetry doesn’t exist in nature. It is a human creation. A creation to which Anthony Phelps could have given amongst his most noble letters.
