An enormous fireplace has damaged out within the North East of England with smoke seen for miles.

The blaze is believed to be at a manufacturing unit on Durham Road, Birtley, close to Gateshead.

Pictures and video posted on social media present the dramatic scene, with brilliant orange flames rising from the constructing.

Emergency providers are in attendance.

The constructing on fireplace is believed to be the previous AEI cable manufacturing unit, which shut down in 2017 after its dad or mum firm determined to shut its manufacturing base and never pay redundancies. 200 of the agency’s staff misplaced their jobs this week whereas one other 40 had been made redundant.
