WW2 Veterans collect in Normandy to recollect D-Day landings | UK | News | EUROtoday
On 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched a mixed naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France.
The ‘D’ in D-Day stands merely for ‘day’ and the time period was used to explain the primary day of any giant navy operation.
Early on 6 June, Allied airborne forces parachuted into drop zones throughout northern France.
Ground troops then landed throughout 5 assault seashores – Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
By the tip of the day, the Allies had established a foothold alongside the coast and will start their advance into France.
