There has been a big drop in meals donations at a meals financial institution in Guernsey, a charity has mentioned.

Guernsey Welfare Service (GWS) mentioned a small seasonal dip in donations was anticipated, however shortages of provides at native supermarkets has meant buyers have been “prioritising their own needs”.

Sue Friec, from the charity, mentioned there was additionally an elevated demand for the meals financial institution service, which serves a median of 68 households every week.

Ms Friec mentioned usually donations would match what was given out, however within the final month “more has gone out than has come in, leaving us with empty shelves”.

The service posted on social media and defined it wanted pressing donations.

Ms Friec mentioned folks on the island had been “incredibly generous” and because the submit had obtained some donations.

“Some people didn’t even know there was a food bank in Guernsey but now they do,” she mentioned.
