A Conservative MP who opposes an modification which might decriminalise abortion stated it doesn’t present girls “with the mechanism to do so safely”.
Caroline Johnson advised BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think it’s worth recognising that what this does is legalise abortion to term for any reason, but it doesn’t provide women with the mechanism to do so safely, and that, in my view, is the wrong thing to do.
“If MPs think they want abortion to be legalised to term, they should bring forward an amendment that does that in a way that allows women to access that through the healthcare system,” Dr Johnson stated.
“What this amendment does is it makes it so that it’s legal for a woman to have an abortion, but she can’t get it through the healthcare system.
“That forces her into more dangerous ways, or perhaps misleading doctors over telemedicine in order to do so and I think that’s unsafe.”
The Sleaford and North Hykeham MP, who can also be a guide paediatrician, added: “You have no idea when someone accesses abortion pills over telemedicine whether they are for that woman that’s speaking to you, or whether someone is sat there making her say what she’s saying.”
