ABC News’ Matt Gutman apologized Wednesday after conservatives ripped him for casting a romantic glow on the textual content exchanges between Charlie Kirk homicide suspect Tyler Robinson and his roommate.

Gutman was accused of gushing over the phrases of endearment Robinson apparently used, drawing the ire of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (“Legacy media in all its glory”), Indiana Sen. Jim Banks (“Wait, what???”) Fox News host Will Cain (“Fundamentally, irredeemably, broken”) and Meghan McCain (“Is everyone @ABC out of their minds?!”).

After the prosecution laid out its case at a press convention with textual content messages as proof, Gutman targeted on Robinson’s lovey-dovey language: “It was very touching in a way that many of us didn’t expect. A very intimate portrait into this relationship between the suspect’s roommate and the suspect himself, with him repeatedly calling his roommate, who was transitioning, calling him ‘my love’ and ‘I wanna protect you, my love.’”

“So it’s this duality of someone who the attorney said not only jeopardized the life of Charlie Kirk and the crowd, but was doing it in front of children … and on the other hand, he was speaking so lovingly about his partner,” Gutman mentioned.

DISGUSTING: ABC’s Matt Gutman says he’s unsure “if we have seen an alleged murder with such specific text messages” that had been “very touching, in a way, that I think many of us didn’t expect — a very intimate portrait into this relationship between the suspect’s roommate and the… pic.twitter.com/ulPcxoOwM3

On Wednesday, Gutman addressed the outrage he’d provoked:

“Yesterday I tried to underscore the jarring contrast between this cold blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk – a man who dedicated his life to public dialogue – and the personal, disturbing texts read aloud by the Utah County Attorney at the press conference,” Gutman, ABC’s chief nationwide correspondent, wrote on X.

“I deeply regret that my words did not make that clear,” he continued. “But let there be zero doubt here: I unequivocally condemn this horrific crime and the pain it caused Charlie Kirk’s family, those who were forced to witness it at UVU, and the millions of people he inspired.”

2. I deeply remorse that my phrases didn’t make that clear.

But let there be zero doubt right here: I unequivocally condemn this horrific crime and the ache it brought about Charlie Kirk’s household, those that had been pressured to witness it at UVU, and the hundreds of thousands of individuals he impressed.

Outlets and people have been fast to apologize and take additional motion for his or her real and perceived missteps amid the stress generated by Kirk’s assassination.

Gutman was suspended by ABC in 2020 for faulty reporting on the helicopter crash that killed basketball nice Kobe Bryant and others.
