The exhibition shines a lightweight on St Albans’ numerous venues – from bustling beerhouses to cosy taverns – and explores the social and cultural forces that formed their fortunes as town moved into the 20 th century.

Thorold continues: “While the world around them has changed, pubs continue to innovate and respond to their ever-evolving environment. Their ability to reinvent themselves while remaining at the heart of social life is what makes them such enduring fixtures in communities across the UK.”

Throughout the nineteenth century, St Albans’ inns and alehouses confronted pressures from fast social, cultural, and financial change. Improved street hyperlinks introduced extra travellers by way of the city, however fewer stayed in a single day as journeys turned sooner. The arrival of the railways diverted commerce elsewhere, whereas new licensing legal guidelines noticed an explosion of smaller, domestically targeted institutions.
