Trump requests pardon for Netanyahu. Herzog: «We want a proper request» | EUROtoday
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has acquired a letter from American President Donald Trump by which he’s formally requested to pardon Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on trial for corruption and fraud. Herzog’s workplace made this recognized.
In the letter, Trump outlined the trial of the Israeli prime minister as “an unjustified political case” and credited Netanyahu with having led Israel “towards a period of peace”. “The president (Herzog, ed.) has deep respect for President Trump and reiterates his appreciation for his unwavering support for Israel and for his enormous contribution to the return of the hostages, to the changing face of the Middle East and Gaza and to maintaining the security of the State of Israel”, reads the notice from Herzog’s workplace. But, the textual content continues, “without detracting from the above, as the president has repeatedly clarified, anyone interested in receiving the pardon must submit a request according to the rules.”
Herzog responds. “Israeli President Herzog has the highest regard for President Trump and continues to express his deep appreciation for his unwavering support for Israel, for his extraordinary contribution to the return of the hostages, for redefining the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza, and for ensuring the security of the State of Israel.” However, “anyone who requests a presidential pardon must submit a formal request according to established procedures”, based on a notice from Herzog’s workplace, following Donald Trump’s letter asking for a pardon for Prime Minister Netanyahu.
