Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged to guard Jewish life in Germany towards growing hostility and assaults. “We will do everything in our power to consistently combat anti-Semitism with all its new and old faces,” stated the CDU chairman on the award ceremony for the Prize for Understanding and Tolerance within the Jewish Museum in Berlin.

Germany will even stand by Israel, “whose right to exist is still being increasingly questioned on German streets,” the Chancellor assured.

At the identical time, it should be clear in any respect ranges of society that the battle towards anti-Semitism is a job for everybody throughout society. “If Jews who have their home here in Germany say today that they are beginning to fear for their homeland, that they are afraid of being uprooted again, then we need a clear response of everyday solidarity and also civil courage,” stated Merz.

This 12 months, the Jewish Museum in Berlin honored the previous US ambassador to Germany, Amy Gutmann, and the Israeli physicist Daniel Zajfman with its Prize for Understanding and Tolerance.
