From the boat to stardom: the inspiring story of Edna Imade, the brand new participant of La Roja | Soccer | Sports | EUROtoday

Theirs is a narrative of enchancment born in exile. Her mom, pregnant along with her and her twin brother Paul, fled war-torn Nigeria, crossed the Sahara and arrived in Morocco, the place they have been each born. With two barely three-month-old infants in his arms, Floren Imade launched into a ship heading to Spain; a journey filled with concern, uncertainty and the dedication to hunt a brand new starting. For me it’s an advancement of society, of what we should be as people, of seeing the importance of knowing how to help those who need it,” advises Fernando, protagonist together with Edna of an anecdote that can by no means be forgotten: “In the team we worked well on free kicks; at the end of the championship, when there were two minutes left in the game and in one of those coach outbursts I told him: ‘For your mother, for your brother, because of your race. Remember the boat, break the net… He broke it and we were champions. It was an explosion of joy. The only people he kissed were his mother, his brother and me,” he remembers.

Neither has Jesús Rodríguez, goalkeeper on that group and childhood companion, misplaced contact along with her. “This summer I met her in town and there was already talk about her signing for Bayern and that she was going to play on loan for Real. She is still the same as when I met her when she was seven years old, just as humble, just as nice and good, and not because she is a professional has raised her ego,” says Jesús, who highlights the participant’s want to enhance. “No one has given him anything,” he says. “No one gets to play in professional football, much less in the Spanish national team, without having that discipline and that work,” he provides.

“She was never small. She was a tall, big soccer player. She was always very fast, with a lot of power, very humble. She barely spoke. She was a very discreet girl,” remembers Pablo Daza, her coach at AD Nervión. “She was different from the others. From the first moment, and I think I have a good clinical eye, you could see her. And that, in that team, since it was not professional, we trained very little. Shortly after arriving, I spoke with both Lola Romero, president of Atlético de Madrid, and with Markel Zubizarreta, sports director of Barcelona. I told them both the same thing: ‘You have to see this soccer player. She is 16 years old, but she is ready to enter the dynamics of the first team.’ “I insisted: ‘Tomorrow she goes to be an elite soccer participant.’

Daza knew that, “sooner or later,” he was going to succeed in the elite. He did it, maybe, he believes, just a little late. “The humility and human quality that she has with her teammates in the locker room is worthy of mention. The simplicity. In the non-professional categories, when you don’t speak to the soccer player it is very difficult for him to listen to you, because what the soccer player wants is to play, not compete, but he never made a problem.
