WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department stated Wednesday it’s going to droop the processing of immigrant visas for residents of 75 nations whose nationals are deemed more likely to require public help whereas residing within the United States.

The State Department, led by Secretary Marco Rubio, stated it had instructed consular officers to halt immigrant visa purposes from the nations affected in accordance with a broader order issued in November that tightened guidelines round potential immigrants who may grow to be “public charges” within the U.S.

The suspension, which can start Jan. 21, is not going to apply to candidates in search of non-immigrant visas, or momentary vacationer or enterprise visas.

“The Trump administration is bringing an end to the abuse of America’s immigration system by those who would extract wealth from the American people,” the division stated in a press release. “Immigrant visa processing from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassess immigration processing procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would take welfare and public benefits.”

The listing contains Russia, Iran and Afghanistan, in addition to a number of nations in Africa, in response to the State Department.
