How outdated is that this home? | From the shooter to the town | Culture | EUROtoday
This dwelling in El Port de la Selva (Girona) has a descriptive identify, the Sobrevent House is designed to guard its tenants from the uncomfortable, the Tramuntana, the robust north wind, and, on the identical time, to guide them in direction of the perfect of the place: the views over the bay.
Thus, the house is each shelter and pedestal. And to make these opposites coexist, it deploys two staircases, one central and one exterior, which join the areas and multiply the routes. The exterior staircase ascends from the porch to the deck to get nearer to the nautical views. There, a pergola, entrusted to deciduous climbing crops, will crown the home, naturalize it, camouflage it and thus shield the enjoyment of the inhabitants from extra solar.

The inside staircase, nonetheless, continues the terracotta ground—and fireside. It has a collected and but sculptural character. It is the one curve in a Loosian home of pure geometry in a compact quantity that speaks each of modernity and custom. How do you do it? Understanding that they aren’t opposing ideas.

On the one hand, the thick ceramic partitions—completed in lime mortar—allude to an historical custom and, subsequently, out of time. How do architects then replace an historical custom? Beyond the know-how – hidden – and the supplies – more practical -, the home works on the thresholds, the intermediate area, and – above all – establishes a number of routes of vertical and horizontal communication.

In this dwelling—with 4 rooms of comparable measurement—there isn’t any hierarchy. And sure communication. Curiously, the double vertical communication, with an inner and an exterior staircase, doesn’t sacrifice privateness. Nor, virtually, the area that, however, appears to multiply.
