Le Balto, La Civette, Le Café des sports activities… between 2002 and 2022, France misplaced 18,000 of its tobacco bars. And with them, structuring locations of sociability, each within the metropolis and within the countryside. A silent bloodbath which isn’t with out impression on the development of the vote for the intense proper, in line with a research by the Center for Economic Research and its Applications (“When the tobacco bars close. By crossing twenty years of data on the closures of tobacco bars, thanks to the register of gaming terminals from Française des jeux, with electoral results and 2.19 million parliamentary interventions, political science researcher at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) Hugo Subtil shows how the disappearance of these establishments “does not only mark the closure of a business, but the silent recomposition of the social infrastructure of the territories and the erosion of an entire popular way of life”.
