Long confined to vacationer clichés, Swiss yodelling is shifting on from being a folkloric curiosity. This historical Alpine vocal approach, which alternates between “chest voice” and “head voice”, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage listing in December 2025. Today, yodelling is sung in a large number of contexts and crosses the boundaries of folks music to mix with rock, pop and even rap. FRANCE 24’s Jade Lévin experiences, with Josh Vardey.
