Director Ilker Çatak is anxious about freedom of expression in Germany. “There are certain topics that you can’t look away from so quickly. There is a narrowing of the corridor of opinion,” mentioned the German filmmaker in an interview with the Editorial Network Germany (RND).

His new movie “Yellow Letters” is in competitors on the Berlinale. The drama offers with the lifetime of a Turkish artist couple below the repression of the Turkish authorities. “Yellow Letters” premieres on the movie pageant on Friday. Çatak celebrated success along with his movie “The Teacher’s Room” and was nominated for an Oscar.

His new movie also needs to stimulate reflection in Germany, he mentioned: “One of the film’s messages is: We in Germany feel incredibly comfortable when we can denounce the conditions in other countries.” The view inside is lacking.

“How do we deal with the fact that there is this narrowing of the corridor of opinion? How do we deal with it if at some point an AfD government has cultural policy in its hands? These are serious dangers that also occur in this country.”
