The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, declared that he needed to arrange a “mandatory ineligibility penalty” for elected officers responsible of“anti-Semitic, racist and discriminatory acts and remarks”including that political figures should be “sentinels of the Republic”.

This announcement was made on Friday February 13, on the Elysée, throughout a tribute to Ilan Halimi. This 23-year-old Jewish Parisian was kidnapped and tortured in 2006, till his dying, twenty years in the past to the day.

Ilan that means “tree” in Hebrew, an oak tree was planted within the Elysée backyard in his reminiscence.
