The Strait of Hormuz is a slim hole of water within the Middle East between Iran and the Arabian peninsula. About 3,000 or so ships sail by way of the Strait every month – that’s about 80 ships a day. About 20% of the world’s oil and fuel passes by way of it. But now, it’s an lively struggle zone.
As the US and Israel proceed strikes on Iran, and Iran launches missiles at Israel and close by Gulf states in retaliation, key transport routes are being disrupted in addition to oil and fuel manufacturing within the area.
Iran says it has full management of the Strait of Hormuz, and that it could “set fire” to any ships making an attempt to go by way of it.
In this episode we clarify how this struggle may have an effect on the broader world and why closing the Strait of Hormuz may result in greater costs for petrol, meals and electronics for us all.
