Back in 1942, John Wayne starred within the interval journey movie Reap the Wild Wind, directed by the legendary Cecil B DeMille.

The Hollywood basic is ready in 1840s Florida with Paulette Goddard’s feisty lady working a salvage enterprise whereas being pursued romantically by John Wayne’s Captain Jack Stuart and Ray Milland’s lawyer Stephen Tolliver.

An Oscar-winning box-office hit, the movie was uncommon for Duke, because it was one among his few photos by which he performed a darker character and had second billing – on this case, to Milland.

DeMille had beforehand thought-about Wayne to play Wild Bill Hickok in 1936’s The Plainsman, a task that went to Gary Cooper.

The pair acquired on very nicely throughout filming, with the director admiring Duke’s potential to enhance his character.

In truth, DeMille was so impressed, he allowed Wayne to select his personal costumes for his half as Captain Jack. Yet, regardless of being happy to have been forged in such an essential film, Duke was sad together with his function and complained he was solely within the movie to make Milland appear like an actual man. The director had reassured Wayne that he wouldn’t make him do something within the movie that will hurt his dignity, to which Duke quipped, “Getting beat up by Ray Milland would lose anyone’s dignity.”

Talking of battle scenes, when Wayne was filming one with Victor Kilian, an accident left the latter actor with one eye. Reap the Wild Wind would even be the ultimate movie look of Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper as an actress. Of course, she would later make cameo appearances as herself in different films.
