Negotiations between the United States and Iran to finish the warfare within the Middle East will resume quickly, “within a couple of days in Islamabad” after which “continue in Europe”. The affirmation, after many rumors unfold by each Washington and Tehran, got here from Donald Trump. While mediation efforts multiplied from the Gulf international locations to India and even China. «Something might occur in Pakistan within the subsequent couple of days relating to the negotiations. We are inclined to comply with this route”, the American president told the New York Post, causing a positive reaction from the financial markets and a drop in the price of oil. «It’s very likely and do you know why? Because the field marshal is doing a great job, it’s fantastic,” Trump added in reference to Pakistani Chief of Staff Asim Munir.

The United States and Iran will start again where they left off: the reopening of Hormuz, the truce also in Lebanon, the sanctions, Iranian assets and above all the nuclear program. It was precisely the clash over the Iranian nuclear power that caused the rupture in the first round of talks, last April 7 in Pakistan: the US wanted to impose a total stop of 20 years, while Tehran was willing to accept a stop for just five years.

In the last week, American diplomacy has nevertheless kept communication channels open with Tehran and has continued to work under the radar, at least with part of the Iranian regime, to find a way out of a war that is increasingly difficult for the White House to sustain. At the same time, to overcome the double closure of Hormuz – the Iranian one and the one decided by the USA – which is overwhelming the financial markets and global economies, many countries have taken urgent action by putting pressure on Trump to reactivate the negotiations: the usual Turkey, Emmanuel Macron’s France, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, Saudi Arabia (concerned about the possible blockade of naval traffic also in the Red Sea), Egypt, India, and also China – very difficult from the start in condemning the attacks by the USA and Israel – they organized meetings and made statements to ease the tension.

“The worldwide order is collapsing into chaos,” said Xi Jinping, who has nominated China as a “stabilizing power” in a world shocked by Trump’s unpredictable approach, in trade and foreign policy, as well as in armed conflicts. The Chinese president – in a summit with the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed – insisted on the need to maintain “the delicate ceasefire” in Iran, reiterating that China will nevertheless continue to play “a constructive position” in the Middle East. Xi, already the great director of Pakistan’s mediation which led to the current truce, then outlined a proposal in four points (quite generic) for peace and stability in the Middle East: respect for the principle of peaceful coexistence; respect for the sovereignty of countries; respect for international law; promotion of development and security.

Between Xi and Trump, who are expected to meet in Beijing in mid-May, dialogue remains difficult. The Chinese president has promised to respond with “ample countermeasures” to new American threats of tariffs on commerce, yet one more US transfer to hit ties and enterprise between China and Iran.
