Taiwan stated it had reached a “general consensus” with the United States on a commerce deal, concluding a dialogue that had lasted for a number of months. “The goal of tariff negotiations has always been to achieve mutual tariff reductions and preferential treatment under Section 232,” the Taipei Trade Negotiations Office stated in a press release, including that there’s a “general consensus” on these points. The transfer is sure to annoy China, which considers the island a “sacred” and “indissoluble” half whose future is reunification, even by power if essential.
