Asked whether or not Lord Mandelson ought to stay a member of the House of Lords, authorities minister Olivia Bailey advised Times Radio: “The reality of the removal of a peerage is a complicated one. You have to have been, I believe, sent to jail for over 12 months or an Act of Parliament needs to be passed.

“But… Peter Mandelson has stated that he doesn’t intend he’s, he’s. He just isn’t presently within the House of Lords and I do perceive that he doesn’t intend to return.”

Lord Mandelson is currently on a leave of absence from the Lords.

Pressed if she was comfortable with him remaining a member of the upper chamber, Ms Bailey said: “I feel it is clear that he has inquiries to reply. He will account for these.

“It is right that he’s not a member of the party. He is not currently sitting in the House of Lords.”
