“In a week’s time the leaders will meet to look at competitiveness, reforms and hopefully to speed up the process… what we decided to do ahead of the 12 February meeting of the EU Council was to give the leaders our checklist. I will then send it to each leader of the European Union, to the president of the European Commission and to the president of the European Council. This is our checklist of what we think is most likely to strengthen growth, improve productivity and really unleash the talent of Europe.”

This is what ECB President Christine Lagarde mentioned at a press convention in Frankfurt, underlining how this invitation to speed up the trail of reforms seems usually within the financial coverage assertion. “We are not aiming beyond our competences – said Lagarde – but we have a position whether it is the Savings and Investment Union, the digital euro, the deepening of the single market, the promotion of innovation and the protection of open strategic autonomy, or the simplification of legislation and the strengthening of the basic institutional framework. We have a position on these five areas. We cannot achieve everything: we implement monetary policy and ensure compliance with our mandate. But we strongly believe that significant reforms must be deepened or accelerated to allow Europe’s potential to be expressed.
