A “masterpiece” warfare movie described as higher than Saving Private Ryan is on the market to hire or purchase within the UK. Paths of Glory (1957) is ready within the third 12 months of World War 1 and begins with the “erudite but morally bankrupt French general Broulard (Adolphe Menjou)” ordering his troops to grab a heavily-fortified place captured by the Germans on the Western Front, the teaser intro on Amazon Prime Video reads.

“General Mireau (George MacReady) knows that this action will be suicidal, but he will sacrifice his men to enhance his own reputation.” The assault is a dismal failure, and Mireau seeks guilty the lads. But Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) is keen to danger his profession to defend the lads in opposition to a courtroom martial. The movie was directed by iconic filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and is held up as an anti-war movie par excellence.

Collider contributor Luc Haasbroek included Paths of Glory in an inventory of 10 wars movies which can be higher than Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed 1998 epic Saving Private Ryan, and followers have taken to Rotten Tomatoes to bathe it with reward.

One wrote merely: “Masterpiece. Like many others of Kubrick.”

Another wrote: “Definitely Kubrick’s most emotionally driven film. It’s probably my favorite war film. Paths of Glory doesn’t glorify the war and fighting itself, it shows how horrifying war is behind all of the battles.

“And it is one precise warfare scene is amazingly carried out. Memorable for the attractive cinematography and one of many best endings of all time, Paths of Glory is a should see.”

A third, who gave it 5 stars out of 5 wrote said when watching Paths of Glory “it would not really feel like a 1957 launch however one thing newer, extra refined and forward of different movies made within the 1950’s decade”.
