A Labour MP who was suspended from the celebration following his opposition to adjustments to jury trials has advised the Express he was “surprised and disappointed” to be kicked out from a celebration he has been a member of since he was 13 years previous. Karl Turner, the Member of Parliament for East Hull mentioned that he had been a “loyal member” ever since becoming a member of the celebration as a baby, and that in his 16 years service as an MP he had “never broken the whip except on the issue of jury trials.”
Mr Turner’s suspension got here as a shock to him, after it was reportedly briefed to the media earlier than he was straight knowledgeable. It is known that his suspension got here after colleagues complained he was “uncollegiate” and was not on account of his opposition to authorities coverage.

He added: “I cannot stand again from talking fact to energy when it issues. Jury trials are a cornerstone of our democracy and an important safeguard in our justice system. Weakening them won’t resolve the Crown Court backlog; it is going to undermine public confidence whereas doing nothing to handle the actual causes; years of underinvestment, crumbling courts, outdated expertise, and inadequate assets.”
Mr Turner has been a Labour MP since 2010, and served in the shadow cabinet of the former leader of the party Jeremy Corbyn. He was reelected in 2025 with an increased majority. The MP described the the government’s plans to remove universal access to jury trials as “essentially dishonest” and added that the plans were “unworkable, ill-conceived, and never supported by any proof.”
He added: “Serious issues have been raised throughout the authorized occupation, together with by the Bar Council, Criminal Bar Association, Law Society, and quite a few charities. Support for these proposals is scarce, whereas consultants warn they may do little to cut back the backlog, threat miscarriages of justice, and even improve hurt to susceptible victims.”

Addressing reports about his previous interviews on the topic, the former Labour MP added: “There have additionally been experiences concerning an interview I gave final week. Labour sources also said there was a “sample of behaviour” that led to the choice to withdraw the whip, which suggests he’ll sit within the House of Commons as an unbiased.
