Social media big Meta on Thursday introduced plans to put off about 8,000 staff, or about 10% of its workforce, because it seeks to scale up growth of synthetic intelligence (AI) functions.

The proprietor of social media platforms Facebookand Instagram, together with the messaging app Whatsapp, stated in an inner memo that the primary spherical of cuts is due on May 20. Along with the cuts, Meta stated 6,000 additional posts can be left unfilled.

Also on Thursday, US media reported that tech big Microsoft was planning to supply voluntary early retirement buyouts for round 8.700 employees, or about 7% of its workforce.

Massive AI funding

The job cuts come as each firms enhance spending on creating AI functions.

Meta has introduced plans to develop “personal superintelligence,” which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated will tailor AI brokers to the wants and needs of particular person customers.

“Personal superintelligence that knows us deeply, understands our goals, and can help us achieve them will be by far the most useful.  Personal devices like glasses that understand our context because they can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day will become our primary computing devices,” Zuckerberg wrote in July 2025.
