Once again, France and Ireland enter the competition as the favourites and their showdown in the second round of the fixtures could decide who wins a Grand Slam.

The championship odds tell us that this match could be the most pivotal of this year’s Six Nations, with Ireland as the 6/4 favourties and France hot on their heels with the oddsmakers at 7/4.

However, one big concern for Ireland has become the fitness of Jonny Sexton, after the talismanic fly half suffered a grusome facial injury in Leinster’s 41-12 win over Connaught in the United Rugby Championship.

They will need as many of their big guns as possibe if they are to down a French side who are entering what could be a landmark year. Not ony do they have the chance to win back-to-back Grand Slams but they also have the tantilising prospect of a home World Cup in the autumn.

In an interview with Telegraph Sport, head coach Fabien Galthié’s said: “It is so important to remain at the top. Not just this year, but we need to stay there for the next 10 years. This needs to be the start of a positive cycle. Those are the stakes: keeping French rugby at a high level.

“To do that, this is fundamental: we must continue to work in osmosis with the clubs. The clubs and the Fédération Française de Rugby must keep working together.”

Winnig big games like this can only raise the chance of Galthié and his side hitting such lofty goals.
