The Pakuranga Tennis Club recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a variety of high-profile activities.

These included a meet and greet past members night, a formal dinner at the Pakuranga Golf Club and a family fun day.

Each event was well-supported with more than 100 sitting down to the formal dinner on the Saturday evening.

Presentations were made by past and present members detailing different eras of the club’s history, with a keynote address by the CEO of Tennis Auckland, Rohan West.

Sunday afternoon’s family fun day was originally intended to be a fun tournament featuring both juniors and seniors, dressed in period costume and playing with antique wooden racquets.

Deteriorating weather saw a rapid change of plans with a tennis quiz organised by life member Jill Hatley and a fashion parade of members in their costumes.

Also on display was a 300 historic photo display, a digital photo loop of players past and present and part of an antique tennis racquet collection owned by member James Li.

“I am indebted to all members of our Centenary Planning Group for the huge amount of effort put in to planning the event,” said organiser Paul Tibbutt.

“The weekend was postponed over four separate dates by Covid, but to see so many members, past and present, finally enjoying the occasion made it all worthwhile.”
