The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be hoping for a quiet 2023 Oscars. That Will Smith is currently on a 10-year ban from proceedings should help keep things running smoothly.
For the organisation’s 7,000-strong membership, this year’s ceremony will be a chance to forget last year’s slap and refocus the most important thing: the films. Well, that and whatever culture-wars maelstrom is currently spinning its way through Hollywood.
The clear frontrunner is Everything Everywhere All At Once, Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s splendid multiverse caper, which leads with 11 nominations. Close behind are Martin McDonagh’s pitchy comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin and All Quiet On The Western Front, Netflix’s unlikely contender, which secured 14 nominations at last week’s Baftas. Both have nine nods each.
Meanwhile, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which the Telegraph’s Robbie Collin described as “like being waterboarded with turquoise cement”, has unexpectedly secured a coveted Best Picture nomination, alongside Tár and Top Gun: Maverick. Perhaps the biggest home-grown success story, though, is Paul Mescal’s graduation from brooding pretty boy in Normal People to serious contender with his Best Actor nomination for his stellar work in Aftersun. He has had a remarkable ascent in the last few years – will he cement it at March’s ceremony?
The 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on March 12 on Sky, and Jimmy Kimmel will return as host for the third time.
