It is a little-known episode of the Second World War: the “whitening” of colonial troops. In September 1944, the French General Staff ordered the withdrawal of almost 20,000 Senegalese riflemen, who have been changed by younger resistance fighters from mainland France. As France celebrates the eightieth anniversary of the Liberation, Florence Gaillard and Jonathan Walsh return to this darkish episode in army historical past, in homage to those troopers who’ve been forgotten for too lengthy.
