A shoal of basking sharks as much as 8m lengthy have been noticed near a Scottish Highland coast.

The group of round ten had been seen off the Moray shoreline by RNLI volunteer Graham Campbell, who was offering cowl as a mechanic in Buckie final week.

Using his drone, and staying at a distance from the sharks in order to not disturb them, Graham snapped a number of photographs of the sharks within the clear blue water.

Graham mentioned: “I was watching from the shore for a few days and saw groups of them – some were spread out and some were close to the shore.

“It was good climate, calm and sunny, so I managed to get the drone out and get some footage of them.

“I kept the distance up to not disturb the sharks and snapped some photos of them.

“There had been teams of twos, threes and fours – a superb few of them unfold out all alongside the Moray Firth.

“There are usually one or two there, but they seem to be coming in in larger numbers over the last few years. I was down last year to try and see them, but they were too far from shore.”

The shoal contained sharks as much as 8m lengthy – however regardless of their intimidating look, basking sharks pose no danger to people, with a eating regimen consisting largely of plankton.

Graham says he was “chuffed” to have taken the beautiful photographs – and says he’ll return to see the sharks once more in future.

“The water was so calm and clear, and it was a nice, sunny day – it couldn’t have been better conditions to get some photos,” he mentioned.

“I was chuffed when I saw the photos. It can be really hard to get the dorsal fins popping up in a photo.

“It’s actually good to see them within the Moray Firth.”
