“Can you imagine that another life was possible, that there was an alternative to this drift,” Biznaga sings furiously in political creativeness, one of many 11 items on his new album, Now! The band based mostly in Madrid reaches its fifth album by bringing to the desk issues that trigger nervousness within the streets of many components of Spain: the unstoppable gentrification that strips cities of their id, the implementation of shady funding funds, job insecurity , how costly psychological well being therapy is… In distinction, they expose the protection of the individuals of the neighborhood, the appropriate to housing and the potential of stopping a voracious capitalist system. “They are problems that are in the street and that affect us and other people. We do not intend to present a political program with concrete solutions, but our songs do deal with political issues,” Jorge Navarro, bassist and lyricist of Biznaga, tells this newspaper.
One of the leaders of the quartet is Joe Strummer. “The Clash have always been important to us musically, aesthetically and in the way we approach different topics as a group committed to their time,” he factors out. Biznaga, in his twenties and thirties, is a part of a scene of younger performers who’re dedicated to guitar music with social content material. “Guitar music never went away, but it is quite clear that we have already spent a couple of generations of kids aged 20, 25 and 30 orbiting in that music that is sometimes punk and other times more rock. And the youngest people have no prejudices when it comes to mixing genres and that is why such interesting things come out,” says Navarro.
Biznaga, who has already gone on tour to current Now! (see dates by clicking right here), has made and commented on a listing of 17 songs by younger Spanish teams which might be making tough music with content material. “The good sign is that it is just a representation, because we could have made several lists like this,” says the group.
1. Tatxers, Early within the morning: “It’s a trio of charming kids from Pamplona. We follow them closely and they sound quite loud in our van”.
2. Rotten XIII, Buddhist nostalgia: “In Euskal Herria, Rotten are quite well known, but perhaps in other parts there are still people who surely have not discovered this great band. We choose Buddhist nostalgia for not playing the entire album, which contains the song called forward To tattoo it!”
3. The Yolos, Cool World: “This song has played a lot in our van and it motivates us a lot. The lyrics are ingenious and you can see that the instrumental part is very well taken care of.”
4. Come on, Detachment: “It’s a group from Tenerife that perfectly knows how to add punk melodies that stay in your head for weeks. This song is the most obvious proof.”
5. Seggs Tapes, Had to: “They have an incredible attitude and the songs are very fun. They have touches of egg-punk and of noise-punk very dynamic. You can’t miss them live.”
6. Guilt, Daggers: “Project by our colleague Néstor. Catchy pop, but with killer lyrics.”
7. Tiburon, May you die well: “Local companions and the best making beautiful harmonies. We have chosen this song for the way it deals with the topic of death, looking at it from a very original point of view. It is beautiful and the production of this song and the other songs on their latest album, to which this song belongs, is incredible.”
8. Home, Intruder: “Punk group from Valencia, direct and blunt. Perfect to see them in concert.”
9. Zero Sugar, Neither to heat nor to cold: “Dirty pop with some eighties overtones and very electronic, but without losing the guitar essence. “Hyper-catchy melodies.”
10. Chrome, Paul is Dead: “Hilarious song that talks about the supposed death of Paul McCartney and his supposed replacement. Bandaca of cool people”.
11. You are Sega, Bilbao And The Rain: “In 2023 they released their debut EP, which is named after the song we have chosen. They come from different bands and fit together perfectly.”
12. Liquid Love, Metro Goya: “It’s one of the best of the capital’s punk scene and they are tremendous live. This song is from his latest work, which is clearly done with great care. There are more bands like Amor Líquido missing.”
13. Petunias, B0mb4: “This song is one of those songs that you hear once and it stays with you all week. We love the desire and the message that Las Petunias want to give. They are very necessary.”
14. Prison Affair, Between bars: “A group of the best known on the scene underground of punk. His style, more specifically, is egg-punk and they do it wonderfully. They are from Barcelona.”
15. The Snitches, Total 90: “The way they sing, the attitude and the lyrics make it impossible not to notice them.”
16. The Devil of Shanghai, Patti Smith: “We were blown away by their first album and how they do what they want. An album that has to be listened to from beginning to end: it’s cool to see people who continue to enjoy the album format.”
17. Listen to me, Something heat: “A group from Barna that from the first song they released sound like a cannon. Very fresh ideas, and you can see a desire to play and play.”
