It’s two within the morning and Neri Marcorè is strolling by the abandoned streets of Milan. A person slowly approaches, worry overwhelms him. In entrance of him, nevertheless, is the viewers on the Lingotto in Turin, it’s 11.30 within the morning and the annual Doctors with Africa CUAMM assembly is opening.
Marcorè continues his story: the horrifying determine approaches him, crosses him, smiles at him. His face relaxes, his coronary heart calms down, «nothing occurred – he says to himself -, he was only a man». Thus, unmasking the worry of others, the CUAMM assembly entitled “Health on the centre. For everybody’s future.”
The NGO founded in 1950 and the first in the healthcare field recognized in Italy, is present in nine African countries: Angola, Cosa d’Ivorio, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. «You have done and will do a lot for Africa – explains the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani who took the stage at the Lingotto -, and we want to continue to be your point of reference, not only because it is necessary but because we are convinced that Africa should be our first interlocutor. However, we must look at it with different lenses, African lenses, in an equal relationship of friendship. This is where the Mattei plan was born, a project in which I have always believed because I believe a strategy is necessary on this continent, not only for health but also for climate change which is seriously damaging it. But our commitment must go further. We also have the duty to welcome those who suffer, not without rules, which is why we have worked to increase the flow decree for those who come to work in our country. We will also increase scholarships for students who want to come to study in Italy. I also want to add something, but here I am not speaking on behalf of the Government, there are many foreign kids who study in Italy, I believe that it is right to give these kids citizenship. Because it is not important where our ancestors were born, it is not important whether we are the children of Africans or Arabs, each of us comes from far away and it is right to understand the changes in our society.”
On the stage of the Giovanni Agnelli Auditorium, inventive, scientific, cultural and political testimonies observe each other. Africa makes its voice heard.
